Celtic abandon Kamwendo bid

Celtic team manager John Maduka told Malawi’s The Nation newspaper that Phunya Sele Sele was considering roping in the player before the technical department pointed out that the club already has a number of quality players in the same position.

“The issue of Josephy was indeed discussed at some point,” Maduka says. “However, the technical panel felt he could not be considered as we already have two other players in his position.

“So I can confirm that there were preliminary discussions. He could indeed be in South Africa, but he is not here at Celtic,” Maduka adds.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns – another club that has been linked to Kamwendo – could not clarify whether it has already made a bid for the Malawian.

Sundowns spokesperson Kabelo Mosito tells KickOff.com: “Who told you that we are after the player? I cannot confirm anything at the moment and I will have to come back to you on that one.”

‘Shakira’ is already familiar with South African football conditions following his stint with Pirates between 2007 and 2011.

He originally made a name for himself at CAPS United in Zimbabwe and has also played in Denmark.
