Bafana opponents switch coach

Vicente Engonga, the first black player to be capped by the Spanish, has been appointed in place of the Brazilian Jordan de Freitas, Spanish media reports said.

Engonga’s father is from Equatorial Guinea but mother from Spain. He played at Real Valladolid, Celta Vigo, Valencia, Real Mallorca, Real Oviedo and in the latter stages of his career at Coventry City in England.

Engonga won 11 caps for Spain and was in the squad at Euro 2000, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.

Engonga retired five years ago and had been working at Mallorca as a coach and administrator.

He will debut at the helm of the national team when Equatorial Guinea play away in Sierra Leone on Saturday, the same day that Bafana Bafana host Nigeria in Port Elizabeth.
