Bafana need McCarthy - Gohary

News

In his post match analysis after South Africa was beaten 3-1 by Tunisia in a Group D match in Ghana last night, Gohary said the fact that McCarthy’s absence was being felt at the tournament was evidenced by the over dependency on Sibusiso Zuma upfront.

“South Africa did not attack the Tunisian goal for most part of the game because they don’t have complete and seasoned strikers like McCarthy. The team played well but the problem is the finishing.

“Bafana Bafana are depending too much on Zuma to get the goals,” he said.

Gohary, who was coach for Egypt from 1988 to 2002 and was the man who guided Egypt to the 1990 World Cup finals, however, said he was impressed with the performance of youthful players like Teko Modise and Steven Pienaar.

The former Pharaohs’ captain and Egypt’s most capped player Hossam Hassan, with more than 100 caps, has said Bafana Bafana’s defence lacks experience.

Hassan also said the squad lacked a team leader who could lift the team when down.

“South Africa needs to get experienced defenders and also needs someone with good leadership skills on the pitch,” Hassan said.

He added that the Bafana Bafana technical bench has a lot of work to do with the squad if they are to perform better at the 2010 World Cup finals that is being hosted by South Africa.
