Bafana earn deserved point

After going goalless in Egypt two years agao, it looked as though they would never get the ball in the net here either after running low on luck and having a seemingly good goal disallowed for no clear reason.

1 min: South Africa get us underway …

6 mins: Modise tries his luck from 30-yards and it’s an excellent swerving effort that goalkeeper Lama is forced to beat away. Otherwise both teams are struggling to hold onto possession.

11 mins: South Africa settle first and they put the Angolans under pressure on the edge of their box, but there is no way through. Flavio also has a long-distance effort, but it’s high and wide.

16 mins: Should have been 1-0. Pienaar crosses low after good interplay on the edge of the Angolan box and Moriri somehow misses the ball from barely a yard out. Bafana certainly look the most likely to score at this time.

20 mins: Flavio almost gets on the end of a bad back-header from Mhlongo, but Josephs is out quickly to gather the ball at the second attempt. His knee catches Flavio in the process however, and, with the striker’s head gushing blood, he is stretchered off. Bafana are profiting down the wings, with the fullbacks and wide midfielders finding plenty of space.

25 mins: The pitch looks like it’s one of the better ones we have seen in this tournament, meaning players are getting good value for their passes. Corner to Bafana after more good work down the right flank. Punched away by the keeper. Angola are getting plenty of men behind the ball when Bafana are attacking, setting up a red wall that is difficult to break down in front of their box. Flavio comes back on after being stitched up.

29 mins: Angola break quickly and Flavio gets one-on-one with the last defender, Morris, who holds him up. He finally gets a shot away, but Josephs saves easily. Moriri finds space in the box, but fires wildly over on the turn. Excellent opportunity wasted. Fantastic interplay between Moon and Pienaar sees the ball crossed from what looked an impossible situation, but it’s just too high for Zuma.

30 mins: GOAL! Against the run of play, Flavio finds Manucho and the Manchester United striker loops the header over Josephs. 1-0 Angola.

35 mins: Zuma almost hits back straight away! The corner comes in and Lama completely misses it. Zuma comes in at the far post, but his header goes wide. Appeals for a penalty for pulling on Zuma go unheeded by the referee. Flavio has an effort on the turn that is comfortable for Josephs.

40 mins: This time Angola appeal for a penalty for a handball from Mhlongo, but nothing given and rightly so.

HALFTIME: So it’s 1-0 to Angola at the break, but Bafana edged it on chances and can take heart from their performance. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira may have to rethink his 4-4-1-1 formation, with Moriri largely ineffective as the support striker.

46 mins: Angola start the second half.

51 mins: As predicted, Lerato Chabangu is on for Tshabalala and striker Terror Fanteni replaces Moriri. Bafana have now switched to a 4-4-2, with Chabangu playing wide left. Good pressure at the start of the half from South Africa, but they can’t fashion a chance.

56 mins: Figueiredo makes way for Ze Kalanga. Fanteni gets behind the defence and looks to have been caught by Lama, but the referee says no and the ball goes out for a goal-kick. Bafana look much better on the ball this half.

61 mins: A long ball finds Fanteni, he skillfully makes the space to feed Pienaar, whose ball into the box finds Zuma offside. Good quick break from Bafana though. Modise cross-cum-shot almost catches Lama out at his near post, but he scrambles it over the line for another corner. From that, Morris crosses hard for Mhlongo, whose header is wide.

66 mins: Ze Kalanga fires in a vicious drive after great build-up play from Angola, but the ball is wide of Joseph’s goal. Great play by the Angolans though. Modise tries an ambitious effort that has neither the power nor the direction to trouble the goalkeeper.

71 mins: Masilela dribbles into the box but a posse of defenders gather to clear. All the pressure is coming from Bafana. However, it’s a YELLOW CARD for Mokoena for a foul on Manucho.

77 mins: Parreira plays his final card has he brings on Elrio van Heerden for Pienaar. Josephs has to save at his near post from Flavio, pushing the ball out for the corner. Edson replaces Mendonca for Angola. Zuma shoots wide, but he is penalized for handball anyway.

82 mins: Too many passes are going astray for Bafana, handing possession back to Angola. Moon gets a YELLOW CARD for some backchat to the referee. Fanteni sends in a thunderous drive that is saved by Lama, while Airosa gets a YELLOW CARD. Bafana have a goal disallowed for what looks like a foul on the goalkeeper that is difficult to spot. What a strange decision!

87 mins: GOAL! SCREAMER! Van Heerden scores with a magnificent strike from 35-yards that gave Lama no chance. And don’t Bafana deserve that, they’ve dominated the match and could have had a clear lead by now but for some bad luck and some strange refereeing.

90 mins: They’ll be five minutes of injury time as Bafana push hard for a winner. There is only one team in it now!

FULLTIME: Flavio fires wide on the break. Modise has another powerful drive that has Lama working hard. The final whistle goes. Bafana had 17 attempts at goal and can be delighted with their performance.
