Palacious defiant despite Bucs' poor form

Pirates lost 3-0 to Moroka Swallows at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

  • "Only the chairman can fire me" – Palacios

Last week Bucs were knocked out of the MTN8 by SuperSport United, which did not go well with their fans, who responded by throwing the missiles onto the pitch.

Last night a group of unhappy fans were chanting that Palacious should step down, but the coach says his team just have to convert their chances in from of goal.

"Football is about scoring goals, if you do not score goals you do not win matches," he says.

"We created a lot of chances in the second half but we did not take them. I am not blaming any of my players but they all missed chances, [Collins] Mbesuma, Sifiso Myeni and Daine Klate.

"I cannot blame my players, when the team loses it is always the coach that gets the blame."

Palacios insists that only Bucs chairman Irvin Khoza has to power to remove him.

"I cannot say anything about my job, it was the chairman who gave me the job and it can only be him who can makes that decision, and not me."

Palacious was given the Pirates job on a caretaker basis last season, after the departure of Julio Leal, but was offered the job permanently after winning the League title.

Meanwhile, Swallows coach Zeca Marques attributes his team's good form to hard work.

"We have been working hard as a team and working with our wingers and I am happy that it is showing on the field," he says.

"I am happy that in all our last four matches we have managed to score three goals in every match we play."

He also shed light on Siyabonga Nomvete's injury: "It is obviously a knock on the toe and not a serious injury, and he will be available for the national team."
