Gnanduillet is the striker whose signing by Baroka in May was greeted with pomp and fanfare, with the club hopeful that they had found a solution to the irritating goal scoring troubles that now define many a side in the PSL.
Big and forceful, it was hoped that the French-Ivorian would use his height and power to score goals in abundance while tormenting opposition defenders.
Unfortunately the 26-year-old will now be remembered for having been the man who was signed and then dumped at the blink of an eye well before he had even made a single appearance for his new club.
The ink had not even dried on his two-year deal (with an option of a third year) when he was suddenly deemed unwanted by Wedson Nyirenda just a week after the Zambian gaffer started his new job as head coach.
The powers that be at the club who recommended Gnanduillet’s signing prior to the arrival of Nyirenda – who was appointed a week later – were also left stunned just like the player himself.
“I wish I knew more than I know now,” responds Gnanduillet with a heavy French accent upon being asked about what really happened at Bakgaga.
“Apparently the manager [Nyirenda] felt I wasn’t ready enough to compete for a place in the team, plus I wasn’t really what he was looking for. This is what I have gathered,” he says.
The strange decision to offload the big forward came as he was getting to grips to adjusting to local football, having only started training with the team in June just weeks after agreeing to his contract.
“I was there for just under a month during which I trained with the team until the moment when I was told the manager wasn’t interested in me. I never played in any friendly matches with all that I was involved in being the usual action at training. I don’t know what the manager felt was really missing in me because this was still pre-season. The manager obviously came after I had arrived and when he saw me in training for just under a week after which he made his decision. When he made his decision he didn’t inform me directly but rather spoke to the club officials who then informed Michel Sinha (his representative) who then told me straight away to which I said no problem,” details the big forward.
