Qatar-based side Al-Arabi had earlier announced that Xavi had signed a pre-contract with club, yet Alves was left in disbelief after being notified of his team mate’s departure from Spain.
"I don't believe it -- you're pulling my leg," publication AS reported the Brazilian defender as saying.
"It can't be. Xavi? If Xavi leaves, who is the symbol? If he leaves, then anyone can leave.
"I do not understand it. You have left me in a state of shock. That is for sure? It can't be. Xavi cannot leave Barca."
When asked about his own future at the club, Alves said he hopes to remain with the Catalan club – yet then again asked about the truth of Xavi’s exit.
"I hope I am [staying], I believe so - but now you have left me shocked," he said. "You are pulling my leg with that about Xavi, no?"
Xavi joins club stalwarts Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes and Cesc Fabregas on their way out of the Spanish club, who have already confirmed the signings of Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen and Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic ahead of next season.
Yet Barcelona’s overhaul has not perturbed Spanish forward Pedro Rodriquez, who believes it is for the best.
"There will be a deep change," he said. "But it will be good for the club and we are relaxed about it."
Barcelona failed to win any major silverware this year, finishing second in the La Liga standings and losing the Spanish Cup final to rivals Real Madrid.
