Russia needed to win the game in order to stand a chance of progressing and they struck in the sixth minute with Alexander Kokorin meeting a pin-point Oleg Shatov cross with a powerful header that left keeper Rais Mbolhi with no chance.
Despite sharing equal amounts of possession with the Russians in the first half Algeria didn’t threaten the Russian goal. They did manage to win important headers inside the Russian box and, but none of the attempts were close to being on target.
Algeria’s decisive goal came courtesy of a free kick taken near the sideline. Yacine Brahimi whipped in the ball, which allowed Islam Slimani to head. Igor Akineev attempted to intercept the cross but couldn’t get to the ball in time.
Following the goal, Russia pushed forward looking for a wining goal, while Algeria increasingly began to park the bus. Rais was called upon to make a good save to deny Alexander Kerzhakov who sent a bullet of a shot headed for the bottom right corner.
Russia continued to look for a winner with their last decent chance coming in the 90th minute from a header from Alexey Koslov that went marginally wide.
It is the first time that Algeria progress from the group stage and they join Nigeria as Africa’s representatives in the last 16.
Algeria will face Germany in their last 16 encounter.
