Ertugral: NFD no walk in the park

Following a tough 2-1 victory at Jomo Cosmos in their season opener, the Urban warriors followed up that result with a dismal goalless draw at home to neighbours Cape Umoya United on Tuesday in a match that did little to inspire.

When quizzed about his players’ mental strength, having been a PSL club and now competing in South Africa’s second tier, Ertugral acknowledged that his squad need to display a change in attitude.

“It’s not easy in this league – they know that very well,” he said. “It’s not a walk in the park. It’s not that we are PSL players … no, no, no. You need to work for your money here, and be professional. You need to work hard in any situation you face.”

Ertugral added that he has not been impressed with his players’ performances so far, especially from those who have been schooled in the Ajax system, and feels he has every right to be upset.

“The football knowledge needs to be better, especially those who have been in the Ajax youth section – they have to be better,” he said. “And I’m not happy with that. I’m criticising them, but I think I have the right to criticise them. They need to pick up their socks! It’s not a walk in the park in this league here. And they need to know that.”

Ajax will play a second NFD Cape derby in succession when they host Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium this afternoon, with kick-off set for 15h00.
