Baroka ease relegation fears

With the least number of victories in the entire league, Maritzburg started strongly as a free-kick from Yazid Atouba forced Elvis Chipezeze to prevent it from reaching the net on five minutes.

The pressure continued after Yannick Zakri ran down the byline to pull a cut back for Keletso Makgalwa, who fired over the top minutes later.

It was the turn of Bakgaga to threaten, as a free-kick from Jemondre Dickens rattled the top of the crossbar from 25-yards inside the 34th minute.

The latter handed the visitors the lead on the stroke of halftime after heading home a cross from the flank.

Cutting a frustrated figure, embattled Maritzburg boss Fadlu Davids wasted no time in ringing the changes at the start of the second half.

As such, in came attacking enforcements in Belgian Andrea Fileccia and Siphesihle Ndlovu for Mohau Mokate and Makgalwa respectively.

The Team of Choice were still left in first gear, with nothing promising propping up in their path in the way of clear-cut opportunities in front of goal.

Baroka threatened a second, and Dickens gave Maritzburg a scare with a looping shot from outside the box, finding the top of the crossbar for the second time in the game on the half hour mark.

Inside the final quarter, Maritzburg's battles in front of goal raged on with Ndlovu and Fileccia failing to add impetus in that particular compartment.

Baroka's first substitution saw Zimbabwean forward Ranca Chivaviro coming on for Dickens, while United's introduced Bandile Shandu for Atouba in their final change.

In added time, Maritzburg almost pulled the leveller but acrobatic goalkeeping from Chipezeze steered Shandu's close-range shot for a corner.

From the corner, Zakri used his aerial advantage to head against the top of the crossbar, much to the frustration of Davids who ends the year under huge pressure while Baroka move off the bottom.
