Benzema set for France reprieve

News

The Real Madrid forward was charged with conspiracy to blackmail in a case involving fellow Frenchman Valbuena, with a court restriction preventing the 28-year-old from being in contact with the midfielder as he was then suspended indefinitely from the French national team.

The investigating judge last month lifted that order, which was then appealed, yet on Friday the appeals court lifted the restriction, which should see the feared striker return to his national team’s set-up.

"The Versailles appeals court confirmed the decision of the investigating judge, which allows Karim Benzema to meet Mathieu Valbuena," L'Equipe quoted Olivier Combe, one of Benzema's legal team, as saying.

Sylvain Cormier, one of Benzema’s lawyers, was understandably happy with the outcome as he hopes to see his client back in the national side.

"Common sense has reasserted itself," he said.

"This decision lifts the legal obstacles that could have existed."

The decision to re-instate Benzema into the national team now lies with the French Football Federation, having been suspended since 10 December.

‘Benz’ has netted 27 goals in 81 matches for Les Bleus.

The Frenchman's club side Real Madrid are in action against Las palmas in their next La Liga fixture on Sunday.
