Tinkler: Early goal was key

Nedbank Cup

Pirates beat Cosmos 3-1 at Olen Park on Sunday to reach the quarter-finals of the competition, and reassert their dominance over Ezenkosi following a 5-0 rout of Jomo Sono's charges in the league last month.

In-form striker Tendai Ndoro gave Bucs the ideal start with a headed finish barely three minutes in for his sixth goal of the season.

Fellow Zimbabwean Charlton Mashumba equalised midway through the first stanza with a stunning long-range effort.

However, Luvuyo Memela hit back on the stroke of half-time before Ndoro completed his brace from close range in the 49th minute.

“I think we played very well to be honest,” Tinkler told his club's website.

“We created a lot of chances at the beginning of the match. We knew coming into this match that they would be anxious from the previous match against us so it was important that we scored early and we did just that.

“But honestly we should have been 2-0 up in the opening five minutes but we failed to capitalise on the chances. But be that as it may, I’m happy with our overall performance.”
