Swallows FC secured a 1-0 win over Cape Umoya United to secure progression to the Nedbank Cup Last 16 on Sunday afternoon.
Swallows gave goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni his first start of the season, with Virgil Vries rested, while Cape Umoya included veterans Tshepo Gumede and Michael Morton.
Both sides sized each other up with misplaced passes, loose balls and mistimed attacking movements setting out the earlier inter-phases of the match.
Sifiso Hlanti went close for the Dube Birds midway through the first half with a speculative shot from close-range, but it failed to trouble their opposite number.
The Dube Birds continued going forward in the latter minutes of the half and with that profited through Sipho Sibiya, but it was disallowed for offside following a cross from Ruzaigh Gamildien.
No changes were made ahead of the second stanza, as a promising free-kick by the visitors forced Ngobeni to make a solid save in the centre of the six-yard area.
The Dube Birds had the breakthrough 12 minutes from the break courtesy of a decent finish from Kamohelo Mahlatsi as the visitors went to sleep at the back.
Ngobeni kept the visitors at bay with a string of saves midway in the second half following a few half-hearted attempts.
Swallows made a change in the last 20 minutes of the match in Joseph Mhlongo, who entered for Fawaaz Basadien.
The threats continued coming from the Spirited Ones as the match fizzled out, however the Dube Birds absorbed the pressure to see out the win and a passage to the last 16.
