Brockie sets himself goal target

Nedbank Cup

The New Zealand-born striker has made one start and two substitute appearances since joining the Brazillians from Tshwane rivals SuperSport United and is just itching to get the monkey off his back.

An opportunity to get that first goal will be presented against Cape Town All Stars in the Nedbank Cup last 32 at Athlone Stadium on Friday (20h00).

“When you go to a new club you always want to find your feet as soon as possible and find the back of the net. I did not have too many chances against Cape Town [City] and I was disappointed with the header I had against Chiefs, and I obviously hit the crossbar as well [in the same game]. So I am slowing getting closer. Once that first one gets in, they’ll start flowing from there,” Brockie says.

“I have been brought here to score goals and that’s what I am paid to do. I would love to get off the mark as early as possible. Hopefully this Friday I can stop talking about getting the first one out of the way and talk about how many I am going to score.”

Brockie has one league goal this season and is hoping he can score “seven or eight” in the final 10 matches of the campaign to help Sundowns win the Absa Premiership title.

“In terms of winning the golden boot in the league it’s out of the way, but there’s 10 league games left. It depends on how many games I am going to be involved in, but if I can get seven or eight between now and the end of the season, I hope it can be enough to play my part in the team.”

Brockie says he was warmly welcomed by his teammates and is loving the strong competition in the team.

“I love it. The boys have made me feel welcome since I have been here. It’s a very professional set up in terms of the training facilities, gym and everyone is well looked after. There’s a winning mentality and there’s a demand from the coaches and everyone to fight for their places. It’s a very competitive squad and I am really enjoying that part of it. It’s something I have not experienced in my professional football career.”
