Ernst reveals new goalkeeper approach

Nedbank Cup

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune made a long-awaited return to action on the weekend and coach Ernst Middendorp has since discussed his approach going forward.

Chiefs continued their fine run of late, beating GladAfrica Championship side Royal Eagles 1-0 to advance to the Nedbank Cup Last 16 despite a somewhat lacklustre showing at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

However, it was a first appearance since September for Khune, who took back the captain's armband after he had been side-lined for most of 2019 through injury and ultimately lost his number-one spot to Daniel Akpeyi.

Middendorp has since opened up about the decision to field the 32-year-old, who he revealed is targeting a return to the Bafana Bafana squad, while also discussing possibly giving third-choice Bruce Bvuma a run at some point during the business end of the season.

“I hope that Bruce Bvuma [almost comes back into it], he has different qualities and is in a different area in terms of shot-stopping – he’s quick on his legs, therefore let’s add him too,” said Middendorp.

“So, we basically have three national team goalkeepers, and I hope Itu will come back into the setup of Bafana Bafana – that’s definitely his goal.

“In the moment, it’s best to not think too much about it. The game was successful, now I sleep, then we’ll go back to training and prepare ourselves the next game.

“We chatted with the goalkeeping department, they have a very clear understanding of what’s possible so let’s wait and see actually. I don’t want to make a decision now.

“Daniel has played a very solid run of games in the league, he’s very qualified and kept us in the game very often, therefore in the moment I would say probably Daniel next week and if the cup competition is coming a week later, I don’t have a problem making a selection with Itu or without Daniel.

“We don’t talk too much about it, we just make the decision and that’s it.”
