Baxter: I didn’t 'save players for Bucs'

Chiefs walked away 2-1 winners on Saturday at Soccer City, despite Tefu Mashamaite, Tsepo Masilela, Knowledge Musona and Siphiwe Tshabalala being relegated to the bench.

“I put a team on the field against Stars that I felt could do the job against one of the best teams in the country,” Baxter says.

The coach also insists that he did not have “one eye on Orlando Pirates” for Tuesday’s MTN8 semi-final, second leg clash.

“It had nothing to do with saving players for Pirates. We’ve had a hellish schedule and some of the players were on the verge of getting down injured,” Baxter says.

“I picked players who are fit ahead of players who were going down and risking being injured. I wanted a team that could do two things; win the game and give other players who need a rest, a well earned rest.”
