Castro: Coach needs to help us also

Speaking after Chiefs surrendered a comfortable two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday evening, Castro expressed his frustration at the manner in which Phunya Sele Sele nabbed two quick goals in the space of just two minutes to steal a point at the FNB Stadium.

Though the Colombian forward lamented the elementary defensive errors, he felt perhaps the coach could have quickly intervened when momentum began to swing in the visitors’ favour.

“Really, I feel frustrated until now because we were leading the game [against Celtic], so we were supposed to also read the game and close the game,” said Castro.

“Sometimes this is the part of the coach, he needs to help us also. As the players we know inside [the pitch] what is happening and we try, but at the end of the day I still say we can’t concede goals like that because it’s stupid goals.

“The last game [against SuperSport United] we also made the same mistakes in the same situation and [conceded] the same goals. So, we can’t concede like this. We need to be more focused on our defensive job because that can draw a game like this.”

Asked to elaborate on how he feels the coach could have helped, Castro suggested perhaps bringing on a more defensive-orientated midfielder like Wiseman Meyiwa for Siphelele Ntshangase would not only have reinforced their backline but also afforded the latter some rest ahead of the weekend’s cup tie.

“We were talking last night about the game, we were leading 2-0 so if the coach closed the game and put on a midfielder like Meyiwa, and maybe give Ntshangase time for recovery for the next game then maybe that could have worked,” he added.

“Maybe I’m wrong or I’m right, but we need to try something different because sometimes when you play two or three games in a row you get tired – you are a human being so you get tired.

“So, we need to have some players on the field subbed to refresh the team, to help us inside [the game]. That’s my opinion.”
