De Sa: Phungwayo on the up

Phungwayo has played every minute of Bucs' last four games ahead of Bafana Bafana defender Thabo Matlaba, who lost his place in the side after picking up a suspension in a 2-1 loss to Zamalek in the CAF Champions League on September 1.

Phungwayo was notably named Man of the Match in the Soweto Derby draw with Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday, while De Sa, who worked with the 25-year-old at Bidvest Wits, feels the player also impressed in the sterile stalemate with Al Ahly this past Sunday.

"He can only grow in confidence from here," De Sa told Pirates' official website.

"He did well for us which is good for him. He got a chance and ran with it.

"We try to get the competition going in the team and now that he has done well for the past two matches, especially being named Man of the Match in the Soweto Derby, he will grow in confidence."

The Sea Robbers next face Platinum Stars in the MTN8 Final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
