Benson sticks to his guns

The veteran defender was integral to Platinum Stars’ victory in the decider, but most of the talk after the game centred around his comments that the Buccaneers asked him to sign insurance documents to effectively end his career following an horrific knee injury suffered in 2009.

The issue has dominated social networking sites ever since, and today Mhlongo tells this website he stands by what he said.

"I cannot change the statement. I am not going to respond on what other people are making out of it. They have their own agendas," Mhlongo says.

"What I said was not about Pirates, but my injury. I said if I had agreed to sign those papers then it would have ended my career. My message was to players to believe in themselves and never give up in football.

"I did it myself and I am happy that was able to bounce back and now win a trophy with Platinum Stars. I am not going to change my statement or respond to people who have their own agendas."

Mhlongo says even if his team had beaten Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 Final, he would have still said what he said.

"My wife, my children and my family know about this and I don’t care about what other people are saying. Even if were playing against Kaizer Chiefs, I would have said how I survived the injury."
