Kick-off is at 8.15pm.
Pirates have progressed to this stage of the tournament thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over SuperSport United in the quarter-finals (2-2 after extra time) and a 2-1 aggregate victory over Kaizer Chiefs in their two-legged semi-final.
Their line-up from the semi-final, second leg, match against Amakhosi was: Khune, Gaxa (Majoro 89), Mashamaite, Gould, Masilela, Katsande, Tshabalala (Dladla 81), Letsholonyane, Nkosi (Nkhatha 58), Parker, Musona.
The Buccaneers’ record in the MTN8 (since it was launched in 2008) is seven wins, six draws and three defeats from 16 matches.
In Top Eight Cup history, Pirates have claimed nine titles (1972, 1974, 1978, 1983, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2010 and 2011) from 14 previous appearances in the final.
This will be the Buccaneers’ 15th Top Eight final appearance and a third in the past four editions of the MTN8.
Stars have progressed to this stage of the tournament thanks to a 3-0 win over Free State Stars in the quarter-finals and a 6-3 aggregate triumph over Bidvest Wits in their two-legged semi-final.
Dikwena’s record in the MTN8 (since it was launched in 2008) is three wins from as many matches, all taking place this season.
This match will represent Stars’ debut appearance in an MTN8 final and their third top flight final since earning promotion in 2003.
The top two individual goal scorers in this year’s MTN8 will go head-to-head on Saturday: Lennox Bacela (Orlando Pirates) and Siphelele Mthembu (Platinum Stars). Both have scored three goals en route to the Final.
This will be just the fourth competitive cup meeting of Pirates and Stars. The teams’ first cup clash was in the 2003 Absa Cup, when Dikwena – then still known as Silver Stars and a second-tier side – famously defeated Bucs 2-0.
Pirates claimed revenge in the teams’ next knockout clash, a 2005 Absa Cup last 32 match which the Soweto side won 1-0.
The most recent cup meeting of the teams was in the quarter-finals of the 2005 SAA Supa8 (a forerunner of the MTN8), a match the Buccaneers won 3-0.
The Soweto side has dominated their Rustenburg counterparts in recent years: Pirates have won nine of the teams’ last 10 League meetings, including an unbroken run of five successive victories dating back to the second half of the 2010/11 season.
Stars’ last win over Pirates was a 1-0 victory away from home in the second half of the 2007/08 season. It is their only League win over Bucs.
Overall, the teams have met 23 times across all competitions since the 2002/03 season.
Pirates boast 14 wins compared to just two for Stars, while seven matches have been drawn. Bucs have outscored their opponents 31 goals to 16 in that sequence.
This MTN8 match will be the first clash between the teams in a cup final and the first on neutral territory.
