PSG declared Ligue 1 champions

Paris Saint-Germain have been declared champions after the Professional Football League (LFP) confirmed that the 2019/20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons have been cancelled.

Thomas Tuchel's side has now secured the league title for a third consecutive season after the LFP reached a decision based on a performance index measuring points accrued and games played.

LFP president Nathalie Boy de la Tour confirmed that PSG are champions of Ligue 1 and Lorient have been decided as the winners of Ligue 2.

Marseille and Rennes have been afforded the UEFA Champions League spots, Lille and Nice move straight to the Europa League group stage - while Marshall Munetsi's Reims will need to go through qualification rounds.

Meanwhile, Bongani Zungu's Amiens side have now officially been relegated along with Toulouse but Nimes survive due to the relegation play-off system being cancelled this season.

"We were genuinely ready to finish the season like the Germans and the Spanish but we respect the government decisions that have been made," LFP director general Didier Quillot explained, as per ESPN.

"Our aim is to start the 2020-21 season in August, the 22nd or 23rd latest. The date will be decided after consultation with the broadcasters [Mediapro].

"If matches behind closed doors are authorised, there is the possibility that. domestic cup finals will take place in August."

"If the domestic cup finals take place, the winners [not PSG] will qualify for Europe. Otherwise, it will be fifth and sixth place from the league."

"The board validated the end of the championship and the standings. Yes, there will be appeals, but the decisions made are binding."
