Lionel Messi has hit back at reports claiming he tried to he wanted to increase his wages at FC Barcelona.
The Argentine said his farewell to the club and supporters on Sunday after it was confirmed he will not be returning.
The financial troubles at Barcelona and LaLiga's wage structures have played a key role in the departure as the Argentine insists he did not want to leave.
After his speech, the six-time Ballon d'Or answered questions from the media in attendance and revealed he offered to cut his wages by 50 percent.
“The report that I asked for 30% more is a lie. It’s a lie. I offered to reduce my contract by 50%, and then they didn't ask me for anything else," Messi said, as per Goal.
"As the president said, the club has got a big debt, they can't do it, it's not possible [to stay].
"To keep drawing it out would make it more complicated. I need to focus on my career and what I need to do from now on.
"I did everything I could to stay and it was not possible to stay."
