Wits suffer loss in final CAF clash

CAF Confederation Cup

Bidvest Wits’ CAF Confederation Cup group stage campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat to Djoliba FC at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday evening.

Brighton Mhlongo replaced Brandon Petersen in goal with Thulani Hlatshwayo returning to captain the side while Keegan Ritchie replaced Sifiso Hlanti at left-back.

With this clash being a dead-rubber for the Clever Boys, who were already eliminated from the group stages last weekend, the South Africans looked to bow out in fine style though.

After trying to settle in from kick off, the Clever Boys were handed a set back inside 15 minutes when Mamadou Cisse fired home the opener following poor defending.

Wits looked to draw level straight thereafter, but top scorer Gift Motupa particularly failed to find a clear sight on goal as the Malians pulled out all the stops at the back.

Djoliba made further in roads after halftime and doubled their tally courtesy of Oumar Camara, who turned home a delivery from David Ekwa on the hour mark.

Gavin Hunt looked to swing the tide in their favour four minutes later with a double change in Terrence Dzvukamanja and Eva Nga who set out up front.

The offensive reinforcements brought no positive outcome for the Clever Boys, who inevitably depart the tournament with a defeat and no victory from their six group encounters.
