Pitso: Why Ahly are still favourites

CAF Champions League

Pitso Mosimane has revealed why Al Ahly unconcerned by the threat of facing Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad AC in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

The reigning champions face Group A winners Simba SC tonight in a dead-rubber after the Red Devils dramatic 2-2 draw with Al-Merrikh last week secured second-place qualification to the knockout stages.

Losing out to the Tanzanian giants has developed an exciting prospect that Masandawana or Wydad, whom Moismane has a colourful past with during recent seasons - may face the Egyptian Premier League champions.

"It is not possible to determine a favourite opponent for us in the next round, but Al Ahly’s recent results against Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca prove that we are ready to face anyone," he said, ahead of their clash with Simba.

"Al Ahly have nine CAF Champions League titles and we are a big team and the third-best team in the world. We are striving to win the tenth title and we are working to develop ourselves in a distinctive way."

Mosimane added that they will look to avenge their defeat to Simba when they host them at their home ground in Al Salam this evening as it holds significant meaning towards the club's passionate supporters.

"It result does not mean anything regarding the qualification, but it means a lot for our supporters," he said as he addressed the injury issues currently plaguing his squad.

"I prefer to play with a full team. Unfortunately, several players are injured and we have to replace them. Coming in second means that we also qualify for the next round.

"Maaloul is a crucial player and we miss him but that is not an excuse; especially that we managed to win the bronze medal of the FIFA Club World Cup without him."
