Downs complete CAF CL double over Al Ahly

Mamelodi Sundowns completed the double over Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League group stages with a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Star duo Themba Zwane, Peter Shalulile and Rushine De Reuck, Andile Jali as well as goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene highlighted Masandawana’s changes, as Percy Tau featured for Ahly.

Masandawana were first to threaten eight minutes in after a low passing move on the edge of the area feed Mothobi Mvala, who took control and fired on target.

Sundowns continued to enjoy the lion share of chances midway in the first half and took the lead after Shalulile attacked a floating delivery from a corner-kick by Lakay to bundle in.

The deadlocked followed seconds after Mvala’s snap shot on the edge of the six-yard area deflected off Yasser Ibrahim and onto the woodwork.

Following a tough spell, Ahly came alive late in the half but failed to level when Ali Maaloul arrived unmarked left of the area and blazed over.

Ahly’s intentions were apparent in the latter stages with the entry of the substitutes bench of Taher Mohamed and the withdrawal of Karim Fouad.

Sundowns went close to extending their lead 63 minutes in through a teasing shot from Hasshim Domingo, but goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy parried.

The Egyptian number one was out to rescue his team again minutes later when he charged off his goal-line to thwart Pavol Safranko’s one-on-one opportunity.

Ahly were able to provide threats towards the last five minutes and saw a glancing header in the heart of the area by Hossam Hassan flash across the far post.

Masandawana continued to though see the better openings in the closing exchanges and therefore ended up victorious.
