AmaZulu drop points in final CCL clash

CAF Champions League

AmaZulu’s CAF Champions League group stage campaign finished with a 1-1 draw against Horoya Athletic Club on Friday evening.

With first-choice goalkeeper Veli Mothwa not in the travelling squad, Usuthu handed a start to Jean-Noel Amonome and featured while Philani Zulu and Tshepang Moremi were also given a run ot.

Usuthu’s first chance fell to Moremi well into the opening 20 minutes through a move from the tightest of angles, but the player skewed wide and failed to profit.

The host enjoyed a lot of forward play and possession a little thereafter with Ocansey Mandela proving difficult, though Usuthu still saw a decent chance for Tercious Malepe parried.

AmaZulu were still on the edge seconds to halftime and fell behind through a first-time shot on the edge of the area by Dramane Nikiema from a low square pass by Ismael Camara.

Teh hosts made two substitutions before the second half resumed, with Pape Abdou N’Diaye coming on for Mandela while Fode Camara made way for Mory Kante.

Usuthu restored parity seconds after the start of the second period as Thabo Qalinge worked to the right of the area and watched Salif Coulibaly head past his own goalkeeper.

Horoya struggled to cope after surrendering their lead and had Usuthu seeing much of the ball and creating chances at will, but Bonginkosi Ntuli and Lehlohonolo Majoro were unable to convert.

Usuthu should’ve grabbed the lead in the last 12 minutes from a flowing move, but a double save from the opposite goalkeeper Moussa Camara denied Majoro and Qalinge.

All the late flurry of chances and promising moments remained with the visitors, who saw Sandile Khumalo head over a corner-kick in the last seconds as the sides settled for a share of the spoils in the end.

Confirmed line-ups:

AmaZulu: Amonome, Malepe, Zulu, Xoki, Gumede, Moremi, Khumalo, Mlambo, Qalinge, Maduna, Ntuli.

Subs: Boshoff, Masilela, Mzavam Sikhakhane, Kunene, Makhaula, Magaqa, Ekstein, Majoro
