Renard: 'We can do something great'

KICK OFF: Herve, thanks for your time. So you can confirm that you are interested in the Bafana Bafana head coach job?
Herve Renard: Yes, I’m interested. I know South Africa very well and it is a very interesting challenge. But I’m sure the SAFA position will receive a lot of options, so it is still a long way to be elected.

KO: Have any official talks between SAFA and yourself, or your agent, taken place?
HR: No talks yet, they only [recently] decided to stop their collaboration with Mr Gordon Igesund, so I don’t think it is necessary to rush. They are relaxed and we will see what happens.

KO: How much do you know about the South African players and the League set-up in the country?
HR: I spent four years in Zambia and we prepared [for] all the very important tournaments in South Africa. We were always based in Johannesburg. I have also watched your League competition; there are some Zambian players in South Africa. I know there is big potential in the country [but] the results are not fantastic for a long time. Why? I don’t know. Certainly there is a reason. But the most important thing is the big potential … we can do something great, with a lot of work of course.

KO: What do you feel you can bring to the Bafana job which others haven’t been able to?
HR: It’s too easy to say I can bring this, this and this – I just want to be myself, with a lot of humility, because in football when you talk too much before … [pauses] it’s not necessary to talk too much. I can just do what I know how to do. I think I proved with Zambia that I am able to do a very good job. So if the people are excited about my candidacy it will be a pleasure for me; if not … this is life.

KO: What is your current situation with French club FC Sochaux?
HR: My contract will be finished at the end of this month. They proposed to me to renew, but I didn’t accept. So at the moment I am free. I will come back to Africa in July, maybe even at the end of June already, and I will stay in Zambia to rest and await a new challenge.”
