‘Bafana carry SA’s hopes’

Bafana

Shakes Mashaba’s charges take on African giants Cameroon in a double-header later this month, having collected just a solitary point from their two matches thus far in Group M, and have it all to do against the Indomitable Lions to stay on track to qualify for Gabon 2017.

Jordaan admits that the task will be difficult, but has been encouraged by past performances and feels Bafana can mix it with the best on the continent.

"Bafana Bafana have a mountain to climb to qualify for the African Cup of Nations and key to that is the home and away match against Cameroon,” he told KickOff.com. “That is key, and a huge challenge.

"But our team has shown (that they can qualify), even last year in the African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea when we were in that group ... and people talked about Ghana, Senegal and Algeria. People groaned, but when the team got onto the field and started playing, everybody in that African of Nations including CAF officials said, 'This South African team can produce qualify football and it is very competitive team'."

South African football in general enjoyed a successful spell towards the end of 2015, with both the national Under-23 men’s team and Banyana Banyana securing qualification for this year’s Olympic Games in Brazil, yet Jordaan knows it is the performances of the senior national team that is crucial for the country.

"Bafana Bafana is the torchbearer; they carry the South African flag and South Africa's hopes ... they are the indicator as to whether our football is doing well or not doing well," he said.

"You don't look at what happened below ... you just look at Bafana. It is all over the world that it is the senior national team that indicates the strength of your football, so they carry huge responsibility.

"At least they are in the groups now (for the next phase of FIFA World Cup) and we will take it from there."
