One of Lionel Messi's current teammates has explained the extent to which the forward is revered in Argentina, claiming that even the president of the country keeps quiet when the attacker speaks. 

Messi's status in football is beyond question as he is considered by many to be the greatest footballer ever to grace the game.

Having finally won his first major international trophy in 2021 when he helped guide Argentina to their Copa America triumph, some criticism of the player was nullified as there had been an argument that he had never won any major silverware for his nation. 

With the Albiceleste, and Messi, having claimed a second international trophy in less than a year earlier this month when they won the 2022 Finalissima, the team's No. 1 Emiliano Martinez has now described the huge influence the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has, not just in the dressing room but in the country as a whole.

The Aston Villa shot-stopper has revealed how the skipper's resounding speech ahead of Argentina's Copa America triumph last year captivated everyone, including head of state Alberto Fernandez.

"He made a speech saying this was going to be his last one, and that he was going to give it his all," Martinez told Prime Video.

"I was like, little shivers, to Messi talking.

"Everyone shuts up. They're all like that, whoever it is: manager, president of Argentina, whoever is there.

"They just shut up."
