Eto'o predicts Messi & Ronaldo's heir

World News

Cameroon icon Samuel Eto'o has given his verdict as to which up-and-coming star will be Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's successor as football's dominant figure in future battles for the Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo and Messi are both in the latter stages of their career and have a combined total of 12 Ballon d'Or trophies, but with the pair edging closer to retirement, all eyes will be on the next generation of players who have big shoes to fill.

The Argentine's seventh Ballon d'Or this week leaves many people wondering if that record will ever be surpassed, but Eto'o appears to be confident that Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has what it takes to dominate the biggest awards for at least a decade.

"He [Kylian Mbappe] is there and it has arrived at a good moment, in which Messi and Cristiano, the gods of football, are in the night of their careers due to age and Mbappe is arriving," the African icon told Diario AS.

"I hope he [Mbappe] will be the biggest for the next 10 or 15 years. He has everything to be this unique player that soccer needs after these two monsters."

Mbappe finished in ninth position in the final Ballon d'Or ranking on Monday night, having put away 46 strikes and 22 assists in 2021 to date, according to FourFourTwo.
