'Defending against CR7 easier than Messi'

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has revealed why he feels it is easier to defend against Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo than it is against Lionel Messi.

United's caretaker coach Michael Carrick sensationally left Ronaldo on the bench when his side took on the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The decision appeared to annoy the Portuguese forward, who stormed down the tunnel at full-time after he was brought on in the 64th minute of the clash.

Brazilian centre-back Silva played the whole 90 minutes, plus added time, of that match and even had a minor conflict with Ronaldo, who refused to step away from the ball when referee Anthony Taylor wanted to restart play at one point, with the 36-year-old Red Devils talisman subsequently being yellow-carded for dissent.

Ahead of that Premier League encounter, though, Silva told ESPN why he feels is easier to defend against Ronaldo compared to the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"The small difference is that Messi, with the ball in a one-on-one or a two-on-one, is difficult to stop," the Brazil star explained.

"With Ronaldo, I am not saying that it is easy, but one player can mark and the other can monitor – doing that gives you more security at the back.

"However, Messi and Ronaldo are both players capable of incredible things – like Neymar.

"I believe, though, that it is harder to defend against Messi than it is against Ronaldo."
