Paris Saint-Germain were reportedly plotting the signing of a prominent Liverpool star prior to Lionel Messi's switch to the Parc des Princes.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the French giants had their sights set on Reds captain Jordan Henderson before deciding to secure the Argentine superstar's services once they realised he was available during the latest transfer window.

At the time, Henderson had two years remaining on his deal, while it was also reported that he and the Merseyside club were struggling to reach an agreement regarding a new contract.
"For Jordan Henderson, I want to say, behind the scenes PSG were thinking of Jordan Henderson as a potential new signing before the Leo Messi opportunity because Leo Messi was an opportunity, it was not something planned," Romano said on The Here We Go Podcast.
"Before signing Messi, they were looking for a midfielder.
"[Paul] Pogba was more than complicated because Manchester United wanted to keep him, and Paris Saint-Germain were looking for Jordan Henderson when he had no agreement with Liverpool over a new contract."
The England midfielder later signed a new four-year contract with the Reds, though, which will keep him at Anfield until June 2025.
Earlier this week, the 31-year-old made his 400th appearance for Liverpool in a 5-1 thrashing of Portuguese giants FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
