After Iker Casillas officially hung up his boots this week, we take a look at 11 players who have retired over the past 12 months.

The 39-year-old suffered a heart attack while training with FC Porto last year and has not featured since the incident.

The Spaniard officially announced his retirement this week, bringing end to a career to that spanned over 25 years with Spain, Real Madrid and FC Porto.

Casillas was latest member of the 2010 World Cup winning Spain squad to retire, after Fernando Torres officially hung up his boots after playing his final game on 23 August 2020 for Sagan Tou.

Torres has enjoyed great success for both club and country, having won the World Cup and two European Championships with La Roja while he won the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea.

Another great player who hung up his boots in the last 12 months was Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o who officially retired on 7 September 2019 after an illustrious career.

Eto'o is one of Africa's greatest exports as his football CV is sight to be admired by any footballer in history after winning back-to-back trebles with Barcelona and Inter Milan, while he also has two Africa Cup of Nations winners' medals to his name.
