Moyes hails 'magnificent' Rooney

UEFA Champions League

Rooney, who has been in fine form throughout the season, played a hand in Inigo Martinez's decisive own goal at Old Trafford, which leaves United top of Group A with seven points from three games - one point ahead of Bayern Leverkusen and three in front of Shakhtar Donetsk.

"He was absolutely magnificent tonight (Wednesday)," Moyes told Sky Sports. "The players are doing really well.

"We just want a top player like Wayne to play well and he is playing well. I’m repeating myself but I’ve been saying it since day one. He’s been playing well and training great.

"We trained him hard and I think England are seeing the benefit of that as well. We need to see it all the time. That’s what the fans want to see."

Moyes added: "[It was a] good job, good performance. We could have scored more and should have done. We could have scored five or six today and it wouldn’t have been out of place.

"We gave away a couple of free kicks outside the box and I wasn’t happy about that. I think some of the decisions didn’t go our way tonight."
