15 images of Pitso and Ahly's historic triumph

Pitso Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane ended Al Ahly's seven-year wait for their record ninth CAF Champions League title in dramatic fashion as they beat Zamalek in the Derby of the Century - here are the best images of the historic evening.

All eyes were on the Cairo International Stadium on Friday evening as the biggest game in African club football took place with Mosimane up against Portuguese tactician Jamie Pacheco.

With Zamalek boasting one of the most formidable squads on the continent and Ahly losing midfield general Aliou Dieng to Coronavirus, there were some nerves heading into the once-off clash.

But Amr El Suluya's sixth-minute headers settled the nerves to set up a thrilling final in the capital city of Egypt with the White Knights really taking the game to the Red Devils.

Club legend Shikabala's equaliser before the break will go down as one of the greatest goals in cup final history but it wasn't enough as Magdy Afsha's stunner in the 86th minute secured Mosimane's second title on the continent.

In a fitting end for a memorable season, the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss who was roped in to secure the trophy for the demanding Ahly board secured his legendary status in Africa.

"Zamalek have a good team, they played well and gave us a big scare, they made us play better in the second half because they were stronger in the first," Mosimane said after the game.

"They played like us, that's the way we play but yeah, Al Ahly fans, I need to say to them that this is my gift to them. This Champions League trophy is there's, they deserve it."

The former Bafana Bafana boss also dedicated the success to the passionate supporters and jokingly suggested that he can maybe have some freedom after securing them what they've desired for seven years.

"I hope Inshallah that corona passes and we can have them in the stadiums again," he said. "They deserve this trophy, they have waited for long, every week they came to the training sessions.

"Every day, everywhere I go they said 'please win the trophy, please win the trophy'. The trophy is there now, there's the trophy, maybe I can be a free man now [laughs]."
