'Messi made it difficult for PSG boss'

Ligue 1

With Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino expected to be sacked in the near future, it has been claimed that Lionel Messi made things "more difficult" for the Argentine tactician following the player's arrival in Paris last year.

Early in the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's stay at the Parc des Princes, reports emerged suggesting that he had become upset with his manager for substituting him off during a match against Olympique Lyon in September 2021.

These reports were followed by L'Equipe's claim that Messi had doubts about whether Pochettino is good enough for the PSG job as he was concerned about the coach's tactics and his ability to control the dressing room.

The 50-year-old is now expected to part ways with the Ligue 1 champions in the coming days, with the club understood to have begun its search for his rreplacement.

ESPN journalist Julien Laurens has now shed some light on the issues Pochettino has faced at PSG, including how Messi's arrival made things "more difficult" for the Argentine manager.

"It [the impending dismissal] was not 50/50 mutual. I think Poch would have stayed in a different environment," the reporter said, per PSG talk.

"It is still a hell of a squad he has, but was not really the kind of environment he likes.

"I don't think he enjoyed the 18 months he had as there were so many politics, it is a hard dressing room to deal with, but he knew that before.

"When Messi arrived, he made it more difficult because you add so many superstars and so many egos.

"There was the whole Kylian Mbappe saga, will he stay or will he leave.

"I think Poch never really got a grip on the dressing room functioning.

"I think it is more the club than him, but overall I don't think he was very happy there."
