The hosts came into encounter desperate for three points to reclaim third spot from Olympique Lyon, while Montpellier were looking to cement fifth spot.
There was no place in the squad for Bafana Bafana international Keagan Dolly, who continues his recovery with the reserve side.
Despite both sides having something to play for, the opening 45 minutes failed to produce any big moments in front of goal.
The game sprung in to life after 55 minutes when Montpellier were reduced to 10 men after defender Daniel Congre was shown a straight red card, before the hosts had Remy Cabella sent off seven minutes later for picking up his second yellow of the game.
The visitors then broke the deadlock soon after, with Gaetan Laborde finding the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season.
Montpellier were able to see out the remaining stages of the half to claim three points which sees them move three points clear of Marseille in fifths spot.
Saint-Etienne, meanwhile, remain in fourth spot, one point behind Lyon who can extend their lead in third place against Marseille on Sunday evening.
