Falcao saves Monaco's blushes

Ligue 1

AS Monaco came from two goals down to force a 2-2 draw against newly-crowned French Cup champions Rennes on Wednesday evening.

Fresh from winning defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final on Saturday, the home side looked to cap off a fine week while Monaco rolled out the big guns to stay in the hunt for a strong finish to the season.

Rennes were ahead after three minutes when Adrien Hunou arrived at the far post to turn home a wide cross.

Six minutes later, Hunou doubled their lead after sliding home a loose ball from poor defending, with the visitors all at sea.

Monaco’s first chance came after 14 minutes when a goal-bound header from Rony Lopes forced Tomas Koubek into a save.

As the half raged on, the visitors struggled to get into rhythm with Rennes holding out for a comfortable halftime lead.

Monaco made an immediate change after the break, as Carlos Vinicius came on for Jean-Eudes Aholou.

The Red and Whites continued pushing for an opening, but lacked the desired effect to penetrate the opposing defence.

The comeback beckoned in the 69th minute after Radamel Falcao powered home a cross from Djibril Sidibe.

Just five minutes later, Falcao grabbed a brace to restore parity after finishing off a rebound from Sidibe’s saved effort.

Both sides pushed for the winner in the final minutes, but had to settle for a share of the spoils in the end.
