Red-hot Mbappe stars in PSG thrashing

Ligue 1

Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi were all on target as Paris Saint-Germian registered a 5-1 win over Lorient on Sunday night.

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino made two changes from the 3-0 defeat to Monaco, as Lionel Messi and Idrissa Gueye were recalled in place of the injured Marco Verratti and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Messi had an immediate influence in the opening exchanges, as Neymar opened the scoring for the Parisians in the 12th minute with a composed finish in the box after he was played through on goal by Mbappe, who received a flick from the Argentine.

Pochettino's charges gained confidence and Mbappe doubled their lead on the half-hour mark with a moment of brilliance after dribbling his way in the box from Gueye's pass and sent goalkeeper Matthieu Dreyer the wrong with a strike into the bottom corner.

Lorient had their backs against the wall and Neymar came close to making it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime with a free-kick from the edge of the box that forced a save out of Dreyer.

PSG were sloppy at the back coming from the half-time break and they were eventually punished 11 minutes in after Terem Moffi pounced a poor back-pass across the box by Achraf Hakimi and slotted a strike past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Parisians regained their control in the 67th minute after Hakimi made up for his error winning the ball high up the pitch on the right channel and played a square pass to Mbappe, who made it 3-1 and grabbed his brace with a strike into the bottom corner.

Lorient paid the price for trying to play from the back as Messi made it 4-1 in the 73rd minute with a cracking strike in off the crossbar after a cut-back by Mbappe, who won possession on the edge of the box.

Neymar made it 5-1 with a composed finish in the box to complete his brace after a threaded pass by Mbappe, who got his third assist, as the Parisians regained their 12-point lead at the top of the log.
