Five-star Barca reclaim second spot

FC Barcelona reclaimed second spot in LaLiga with a 5-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves on Saturday evening.

Jordi Alba started from the bench, as Barca manager Ronald Koeman gave Junior Firpo a run out with Francisco Trincao given his first start of the season along with debutant Ilaix Moriba.

The Catalans broke the deadlock 28 minutes in when Trincao sent a cutback on the left-side of the area by Oscar Mingueza past goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco.

Barcelona secured a second goal a little later after Lionel Messi steered home a loose ball from Antoine Griezmann’s one-on-one, but it was disallowed for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Messi eventually grabbed his side’ second in the final minute of the half after his low shot from a mazy run struck the bottom-left post before nestling the far side of the net.

Substitutions either side ahead of the second half saw Barca introduce Samuel Umtiti for Sergio Busquets, while Luis Rioja and Victor Laguardia were introduced for Alaves.

Rioja justified his introduction 12 minutes later after he intercepted a loose pass from Moriba to race clear for a composed finish past goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Following a spate of guilt-edge misses, Trincao restored Barca’s two-goal advantage on 75 minutes with a first-time strike from a loose ball on the far side of the area.

The fourth came within a minute after Messi dropped a shoulder outside the area to rifle into the top corner of the net.

Alaves’ woes were compounded ten minutes before time when Firpo tapped a square ball from Messi into the roof of the net to put Abelardo Fernandez’s boys out of sight.
