After Lionel Messi’s two free-kick goals this weekend, Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan claimed the Barcelona captain is undoubtedly the greatest player football has ever seen.
The 32-year-old struck three times in the Blaugrana’s 4-1 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday, with those of goals coming from direct free-kicks.
His performance earned praise from former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who said he hopes to see Messi play football for a while longer.
"Lionel Messi [is the best player in the world)," he said, according to BeSoccer.
"In my opinion, he has very special abilities. He has talent and he always manages to show it on the pitch. He always has the instinct to make the right decision.
"He uses his speed well against the opponents he plays. He has a strong finish. All in all, no one else has as much quality as Lionel Messi.
"He is the star player of my generation and the greatest footballer of all time. I hope we get to watch him play for a few more years."
Messi has found the back of the net on nine occasions this season so far, assisting a further five strikes in five matches.
