Germany cement top spot with late winner

Germany 2-1 Romania

Group J leaders Germany are on the cusp of qualifying for the World Cup after coming from behind to beat Romania 2-1 at Volksparkstadion.

Ianis Hagi opened the scoring for Romania in the ninth minute but Serge Gnabry levelled matter for Die Mannshaft early in the second stanza and Thomas Muller found the winner nine minutes before time.

Latvia 0-1 Netherlands

Netherlands boosted their chances of automatic qualification after opening a two-point lead at the top of Group G at Daugavas stadions.

Davy Klaassen got the opener for the Dutch in the 19th minute and that proved to be the winner, as they moved two points clear of second-placed Norway, with three matches left to play.

Cyprus 0-3 Croatia

Croatia retained top spot in Group H after thrashing Cyprus 3-0 at AEK Arena on Friday evening.

Andrej Kramaric had a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside for the Vatreni in the 23rd minute before Ivan Perisic eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.

Croatia's Luka Modric had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Neofytos Michail early in the second stanza before Josko Gvardiol settled the nerves with the second goal ten minutes before time and Marko Livaja sealed the win with the third goal in stoppage time.

Czech Republic 2-2 Wales

Daniel James netted a late equaliser for Wales, who drew 2-2 with Czech Republic in Group E at Sinobo Stadium.

Aaron Ramsey broke the deadlock for Wales nine minutes before the half-time break but only for Jabub Pesek to level matters for the Czechs two minutes later.

An own goal by Danny Ward gave the hosts the lead early in the second stanza but James rescued a point for Robert Page's charges 21 minutes before time.

Russia 1-0 Slovakia

Russia kept their hopes of automatic qualification in Group H alive after edging Slovakia 1-0 Ak Bars Arena.

An own goal by Milan Skriniar in the 24th minute was enough to hand Russia victory as they find themselves in second place on the mini-log, behind leaders Croatia only on goal difference.
