Rooney: Ronaldo signing hasn't worked out

English Premier League

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford has not worked out, and believes the solution lies elsewhere.

The Portuguese forward has endured a wave of criticism this season as the Red Devils continue to underperform, with some believing the attacker has disrupted his side's pattern of play.

Off the pitch, it was claimed that Ronaldo and Harry Maguire were in a power struggle as both are vocal figures in the dressing room, while various reports have also suggested that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could leave the club at the end of the season.

Despite the issues surrounding his influence in the dressing room, Ronaldo is the club's top goalscorer with 18 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions this campaign, but his former teammate Rooney believes the Portugal captain's second homecoming has not worked out.

"You would have to say no at the minute," the Englishman responded when asked on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football if he believes Ronaldo's return has been successful.

"He has scored goals, important goals in the Champions League early on, he scored a hat-trick against Tottenham, but if you're looking to the future of the club you have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best to lift Man Utd over the next two or three years.

"Cristiano is getting on a bit. He isn't the player he was in his twenties and that happens, that's football.

"He's a goal threat, but in the rest of the game they need more. They need young, hungry players.”
