Man City see off stubborn Villa

English Premier League

Manchester City ascended to the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

Three changes from the Citizens showed as Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden and Rodrigo entered from the side that walloped Crystal Palace on Sunday.

An early baptism of fire fell on the visitors when a snap-shot from Bernardo Silva off a corner-kick forced Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to pull off an astounding near post save.

The title-chasing City made an injury forced substitution minutes before the half-hour mark, as Oleksandr Zinchenko slotted in for Kyle Walker.

Villa came close again when a curling strike from the near side of the area by Ross Barkley following 35 minutes forced City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes to go down and make a save.

The Clarets didn’t stop raiding the Citizens early in the second half after brilliant footwork from Bertrand Traore following a route one produced a low save off Ederson.

However, the Citizens provided a more clearer threat with 58 minutes gone as a marauding run from the right and into the area by Cancelo led to a left-footed shot that clipped the crossbar.

Villa pulled up a strong reply a few minutes later when a fierce shot from the area by Douglas Luiz following a loose ball needed a flying save from Ederson.

The Clarets’ stubbornness were finally seized ten minutes from time after Bernardo Silva collected a pass from the middle, ran towards, pulled a cutback to riffle the top corner.

City secured a second from the penalty spot 88 minutes in when Ilkay Gundogan drilled down the throat of Martinez after a handball from Matty Cash, as City climbed to the top.
