Chelsea claim bragging rights in derby

English Premier League

Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League after edging Fulham 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho and Olivier Giroud lined up as the Blues’ three changes from the loss to Manchester City in their last league match in the first week of the month.

Chelsea post the first questions after the midway stage through a first-time strike from the far post by Mason Mount, but the latter cracked the woodwork.

Rudiger had Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola at full stretch following the closing minutes with a stern header from a pin-point corner-kick by Hakim Ziyech.

Ivan Cavaleiro was given the home side’s first opening five minutes before halftime from a loose pass inside the box but after turning goal-wards, scooped over.

Fulham’s life became more difficult though when a lunging challenge from Antonee Robinson on Cesar Azpilicueta in the final minute of the first half culminated in a straight red card.

Areola was given early bit of work minutes in the second half when he pushed a floating ball towards the near post from Christian Pulisic behind.

A change from the substitutes’ bench on 65 minutes materialised on the side of the Blues, with Tammy Abraham send on in place of Jorginho.

The Cottagers succumbed to the visitors’ pressure play 12 minutes from time when a one-hand palm in the area from Areola landed kindly to Mount, who applied a first-time finish.

It could’ve been two for the Blues from a one-on-one by Timo Werner in the dying minutes, but the German went wide as it finished 1-0.
