Man Utd's 8-man headache for EPL opener

English Premier League

Manchester United could be set to start their season on a worrying note, with reports suggesting that eight first-team players could miss the club's first 2021/22 Premier League match of the season.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his men start the new EPL campaign on the front foot, but according to The Sun, the Norwegian manager could face Leeds United on Saturday without some of his most important players.

New signing Jadon Sancho joined up with the Red Devils for pre-season training this week, but it remains unknown as to whether or not the England star is fit enough to start this weekend's opening fixture. It is believed, though, that he could play a part from the bench.

Forward Marcus Rashford is certain to miss the game, however, after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury, and is expected to only return in October.

Raphael Varane, meanwhile, is yet to be unveiled by United and has not trained with his new team yet after having to quarantine and do all the medicals required, effectively leaving Solskjaer with only two centre-back options for the match against Leeds.

The Red Devils are reportedly short in defence as African defender Eric Bailly will not be rushed back after representing his country, Ivory Coast, at the Olympics. It is understood that United are being cautious with the 28-year-old centre-back due to his struggles with injuries in previous campaigns.

Other players who are likely to miss United's fixture against Leeds include Jesse Lingard, who tested positive for COVID-19 last week – scroll through the gallery above to see eight players who could sit out United's opening EPL fixture of the 2021/22 campaign!
