Ex-PSG star 'identified' as Pogba replacement

English Premier League

Manchester United have reportedly identified a former Paris Saint-Germain star as Paul Pogba's potential replacement at Old Trafford.

With the Frenchman set to be out of contract at the end of the season, United have reportedly begun weighing up a potential replacement for the player.

As the Red Devils' most expensive signing of all time, a lot was expected from Pogba, but some argue that the player has failed to meet expectations since his return, with the team having won only the UEFA Europa League and Carabao Cup since he made the switch from Juventus in 2016.

The 28-year-old, who has also had a few injury niggles since returning to England, is now left with just four months on his current deal, and there has been no indication an extension of his stay will be agreed.

As such, ESPN has now reported that the English giants have identified a "ready-made replacement" for Pogba in the form of RB Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku, a player who is admired by interim coach Ralf Rangnick.

The former PSG attacking midfielder is currently enjoying a prolific patch of form this season, having bagged 22 goals and 13 assists in 33 games across all competitions for the Bundesliga club, per Transfermarkt.

It is said that West Ham United's Declan Rice is also a potential key target for the Old Trafford outfit, but it is believed the Hammers will expect an exorbitant fee for the player, which could price the Red Devils out of a move for the England international.

Nkunku would be a cheaper alternative as he is valued at €55 million (R937 million) by Transfermarkt, which is a far lower than Rice's £80 million (R1.6 billion) reported price tag.
