Klopp: Reds made 'right statement'

English Premier League

The Reds entered Sunday's Anfield encounter on the back of Coutinho's £146m move to Barcelona, leaving the Merseyside faithful fearing the worst following their star forward's exit.

However, Liverpool produced an attacking masterclass against the Premier League leaders, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all finding the back of the net after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's opener.

And, speaking after the game, where the Reds held off a late fightback from City to clinch a 4-3 win and inflict a first domestic defeat of the season on the Citizens, Klopp was unsurprisingly full of praise for his squad.

“We made the right statement,” said Klopp.

“It was not that I said to the players before the game: ‘It would be nice if you could win so nobody talks about Phil,’ but it was important for us to show it’s possible to win without him.

"It was a very important statement but that is all. We’ve got three points but we got them in a very important moment.”
