Impressive Arsenal down PSG

After sustaining the bits of pressure, Arsenal took the lead as Mesut Ozil, who called time on his international career recently, finished off a cross from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang on 12 minutes.

A swift transition move nearly paid off but the exploits of the veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon denied Alex Iwobi from close range.

The Gunners were buzzing, starting with their usual front component in Iwobi, Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Approaching the half and hour mark, Paris Saint Germain showed little promise in attack, the best being shots far and wide of Bernd Leno’s reach.

All the while, Arsenal showed danger and the heroics of Buffon prevented them from adding more. The veteran blocked Aubameyang’s path to goal after getting down to save from close range.

The French outfit eventually got their first shot on target through Timothy Weah who positioned himself centrally to have a crack at Leno who stood firm to punch clear.

A late effort from Laurent Koscielny from the head sailed wide, as Arsenal went to halftime in the driving seat.

A host of changes from the bench came from Arsenal, as the likes of Alexander Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey among others came on.

The first save of the second half came from substitute goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who showed massive acrobatics to stop a free-kick by Christopher Nkunku from finding the top corner.

A foul near the byline by the Londoners resulted in a penalty for PSG. Nkunku stepped up and lashed home the equaliser on 60 minutes.

Gunners regained the lead seven minutes later after Lacazette beat his marker to glance home the opener following a cross down the right.

The contest was made safe for Unai Emery’s men when Reiss Nelson nodded home a rebound off the post following Lacazette’s initial attempt to find the back of the net.

With Buffon replaced by Sebastien Cibois, the latter pulled quick saves from Joe Willock and Nelson but was unable to prevent Rob Holding from heading home the fourth from a corner.

Nelson would have the last laugh, propping in the fifth after connecting with a through pass in added time.
