'If CR7 goes there, he'll burn Man Utd bridges'

English Premier League

After Cristiano Ronaldo's agent reportedly held talks with Chelsea, a former Blues star has advised the Portugal captain to rethink any potential switch to the London club.

Ever since it was confirmed that Manchester United were mathematically unable to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, reports emerged suggesting that this could be a big issue for the Portuguese forward.

Should he see out the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, it will be the first time in 20 years that he will miss out on UCL football.

On the weekend, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reported that the superstar's name was mentioned in a conversation between his agent Jorge Mendes and Chelsea's new owner Todd Boehly.

The London club is on the lookout for a new forward as Romelu Lukaku closes in on a loan move to Inter Milan, and it is believed a move to Stamford Bridge for Ronaldo may be under consideration.

However, former Chelsea star Glen Johnson has insisted the 37-year-old should not make that move, despite United's struggles in the 2021/22 campaign.

"If he goes to Chelsea, then he'd burn his bridges at Manchester United," Johnson told GGRecon.

"From Chelsea's perspective, he's a massive brand and he may be expensive, but you would probably make that money back in two weeks through shirt sales.

"He may cost a fortune, but the club would probably make more by just having him.

"Signing Ronaldo is like signing a commercial deal.

"I don't think Ronaldo can change Chelsea's fortunes as a player now, but I think having him in the dressing room would.

"On the pitch now, he's not the Ronaldo we all want to see, but him being in the dressing room will get another 5% out of everyone around him."
